Tough times continue facing Kenyans across the country as basic commodity prices continue to increase. Households will now be forced to pay 10 shillings more for a 2-kilogram packet of Soko maize flour at Naivas supermarket, down from 130 shillings a week ago. Prices of several other commodities such as sugar, wheat, tea, bread, and wheat flour have also been on an upward trend since 2022. Across the major supermarkets, sugar retails highest at 260 shillings per 2Kg, Wheat flour goes for 170 shillings per Kg, and the 400 grams of bread cost 60 shillings down from 55 shillings last month. The average price for Kenya Black Tea is 254.85 shillings per kilogram. The average cost for a ton is 267,995.45 Kenyan Shillings in Mombasa and Nairobi.

Millers have warned of a possible price jump on wheat flour attributable to global wheat prices, which have shot up from USD 345 (approximately 39,295 shillings) per ton to USD 460 (52,394 shillings) per ton over the last day. A 90 kg bag of wheat now costs approximately 5,650 shillings, with a two-kilo packet projected to retail at between 180 and 200 shillings before March.A survey conducted around food markets across Nairobi County revealed that five leaves of Sukumawiki or spinach go for 5 shillings when these tend to be the most consumed vegetables by Kenyans and Ugali.

Most counties across Kenya continue facing a prolonged drought that has been caused by delays in the long rains, with almost 3.5 million people projected to face hunger.Kenyans, who are currently choked by the increased food prices, and soaring fuel prices, should prepare for a further rise to the food bills amid the crisis in eastern Europe. The effect has already spilled off and caused a hike in transport prices, energy bills, and the cost of manufactured goods.

The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has raised concerns over mushrooming and unapproved construction going on in the city.
Peter Kariuki from NMS has revealed that nearly fifty percent of construction works in Nairobi is unapproved and illegal, putting the lives of millions of Kenyans at risk.
At the same time, NMS says the sector took a pandemic hit with several projects stalling.
National Construction Authority (NCA) board chairman, David Gaitho says up to 32 percent of construction projects were suspended while 16 PERCENT were completely terminated following the outbreak of COVID-19.

They spoke this morning during a construction industry dialogue hosted by the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI).
