This is Guka - Was Kobe Careless or What?

A 30-year old helicopter is not exactly 'old' in the helicopter world, especially if it is a premium type built to higher specifications, well-maintained, and has been running limited hours. This could still be the current model. You could liken this particular case to bagging a 30-year old nun from where you stand. Kobe's craft was a Sikorsky S-76B, known for its robust safety record and high reliability due to its dual engines. This particular craft was doing an average of 188 hours per year, which translates to about 8 full days of flight per year. As for the price tag, 50 millions may seem cheap but the real burden lies in maintenance. A helicopter is like a stunningly hot kunguru. It needs about 10 hours of maintenance for every hour of flight.
NB: Some of these bits may not be accurate or up-to-date, while a few may be made-up. They are mostly recollections gathered from the many hours spent repairing jet engines on Youtube.
Ahhh..... everyone's a critic

Dude was using a chartered 30-year old helicopter that was bought at auction for Ksh55 million from the state of Illinois.

If I was a billionaire worth in excess of Ksh50 birrions I would not dare step into anything above 5 years.

Old things, like old bodies, have serious internal damage...kama mimi unaweza ona nikitembea tau you think am fine lakini mojo hakuna! Kuamsha ni last year...
As @upepo has elaborated, a 30 year old helo that was doing 188 hours a year is still minji minji in the eyes of the beholders. Oil rig helos do something like 750 hours a year and where proper Medevac/Casevac services exist, 450 hours a year. And they still operate more than 30 years later.

The US Army transferred a Vietnam War era UH-1 Huey, after 42 years of service, to the Arizona State Police where it is still operating today. A helicopter just needs proper maintenance and proper flying conditions for them to work well. According to what I've read, the weather was a factor in the crash but let's wait for the official report.

And Sikorsky have more than a century of experience building and maintaining helos. This comes from years of selling and maintaining Sea Kings such as the most famous Marine One helos, as well as the Black Hawk.

Senators can we call a special seating to deliberate about this accident, kobe was one of us and i can see we have a panel of aviation experts among us.

If Ruto supposedly buys new eurocopters for his personal use then this guy is a miser of sorts. With his fortune he could definitely afford a newer copter. 30 years is 30 years with or without low mileage

There's things you have to consider.

1. Popularity of the helo model.

2. How long it will take to assemble.

3. Complexity of the build.

Helicopters aren't built and put into yards for customers to walk by and purchase, then fly away with it same day. An order has to be put in with the manufacturer to get them to build you your helicopter.

Case in point, the recent MD-530s delivered to KDF were ordered during Obeezy's last term, but here they are half the order delivered as Tilumpu is almost finishing his first term. The other half is to be delivered next year.

Also, the complexity of the model will determine how long it will take to build, since they are mostly built by hand. The MD-530 is a much simpler build in comparison to an S-76. It will take a shorter time, which is still several weeks.

Now, since the S-76 is a popular helo, there are already orders waiting to be fulfilled. If 30 are produced in a year with a long list of orders still in line, how long do you think it would take, just in waiting, before your new order starts getting worked on?

In comparison, like the Huey 2s KDF got a year or two ago, take an existing airframe, tear it down and replace the wiring, engines, rotors, gearbox and other critical components then put it back together, the whole process takes at most a year and a half before you get your chopper, instead of waiting five, six, seven years before you see it.

Lootall could have placed his orders soon after the maize and which it is said aliteremsha na mafuta, Triton, KKV and other scandals while he and that traitor were on the same side. The helos appeared several years after.

I can't say I know where he got the money. It could be from legitimate sale of chicken and related products.
