Actually where the government failed was in containing the cost of campaigning and enforcing the law against bribing of voters. It has also failed in enforcing chapter 6 requirements.Let me tell you what happens in Kenya, and why it's a desperate case.
Majority of the population are stupid. They do not weigh the merits of electing a certain candidate. As a result, we get the sweetest talker, who often happens to be the worst idiot. And since democracy is one man one vote, we always end up with such. If you recall one, they replace with a worse specimen.
Tell.me how we can get out of such quagmire. Best you can do is to try and enlighten those close to you. But what happens at the ballot is not within your control.
Have you ever sat with someone and they tell you they will vote XYZ coz he gave them beer? You ask about roads, they tell you they don't have a car, therefore roads are not a priority.
You talk about hospitals, and they tell you it is God who heals.
That is an average voter.
Where the citizens have failed you have talked about it so I won't belabor the point. Citizens are left with no option in a country where through the media we glorify prostitutes, con men, murderers, drug dealers etc. These are the only ones with money to fund campaigns and so they vie...voters are never rational and the middle class doesn't involve itself in politics...so engagement is between the hustlers and the petty bourgeoisie and you can see the outcome.
When government institutions that are meant to clear candidates to vie for elective seats start to do their job we will have solved half of our problems. The other half we stop being tribal and be objective.
