IPPs don't have capacity to sustain a nationwide supply. They are just for stabilizing the network when a peak is reached.
What happened is a loss at the national grid level.
Our architecture is unable to withstand that. Ni kama gari iking'oka gurudumu moja. Can't move an inch
mkuMBWA mimi Niko mbaya saidi ya saidi. Am contemplating joining NBA.
But I thought your point meant that IPPs stabilize the national grid. Umepita southern bypass recently?

The monopoly needs to end. Competition means the users get better deals but this is Kenya, where the likes of @mkurugenzi think we have it better even than 1st World countries 🤡
The issue isn't with competition. There are plenty of countries where the national power supplier is a government agency, and they are effective at their duties.

The problem is the seemingly lack of accountability.

In the US, when PG&E, the private power company that operates in California was found to have caused the wildfires in 2018, they were sued in court, and they even had to file for bankruptcy.

Many other private companies in the US have been in trouble for bad business practices.

If the government dealt with KP not as a cash cow but as critical infrastructure that was central in securing national security, then I believe that these issues would not occur. At least not as frequently.

There's a difference between stabilizing and replacing.
I guess kwako uko na gas cooker ya 4 burners and a meko.
When madam is busy cooking 4 meals, she's content with the 4-burner. If she has 5, anawasha meko.
No way anaweza tumia meko kupika 5 meals
The meko is the expensive IPP.

So in short how do those IPPs help?

They fill the gap when there's a marginal rise in peak demand. Such a rise, if not catered for,can trigger the generators to switch off, interpreting it as a short circuit in the grid.
So for the cost at which we're forced to pay these IPPs, a convenient equipment cannot be purchased and installed to prevent generators from thinking those rises are short circuits in the grid?

the problem is the one sided contracts that the gavament is paying for

The overall contribution to the final cost by these IPPs is kidogo sana. Less than 3 bob to the final cost. Indeed, they just push the average cost of purchase from the lowest by Kengen by a mere 3 bob

So anybody can benefit just because they are taking only 3bob from the general population?

Najua 3bob per KWh sio kitu kwa birrioneas kama nyinyi but ni mob sana kwa wengine wetu. Your comment is almost Marie Antoinette-sque.
You missed the point.
Just explain how the cost jumps from 6 bob to 25 bob for the end user.
Obviously, it is not because of the 3 bob from the IPPs.
