But will they go with the Survivor Hustler Doktari given that he has been part of the Uhuru admin?
Still, the Instagram model aka 001 and his family have greatly benefitted from the port while being in charge for the past 9 years. Jicho Pevu hadi akarisk maisha yake kuonya wa Pwani as to why the said Instagram influencer has toned down his rhetoric lakini si Uhuru amefanya kazi na handshake ni the best thing since Samantha the Doll? Not sure if the claims that a berth at the port has been allocated to them are true though.

Anyway, as @Kender9 has said, eventually this was gonna happen but the manner in which it has been done must be hurting a lot of people who depended on the old system economically.

1. Calling it an industrial area is a misnomer: should be loading and storage area, if it was an industrial area sgr would have been a boost not an impediment.
2. Saying it's an economic crime to the coast region in general is a fallacy of appeal to the masses, a Mombasa problem most likely impacts the mogoka farmer in Mbeere, Embu County than a cassava farmer in kinango, Kwale County. Msilimbikizie wengine shida zenu.

I don't think sgr was the problem , bigger problem is transferring port functions to private owned land in the name of an inland port and using state power to decree that, all goods must end at inland port from the ships
Enyewe when you put it like that, they got a rough deal that can be corrected in a few months time but it should be mutually beneficial, where good destined to areas beyond Machakos county to be landing in inland container depot, while those of the other areas can be left in Mombasa.

If you profit from inefficiency siwezi kuhurumia once the cheese is moved. I was hoping jamaa alikuwa anaongea kuhusu manufacturing, lakini kushikilia mzigo za watu then charge them handling........... walizoea za bwerere
Si basi lets also protest for the cartels at sheria house whose business was killed when company registration went online.
Tukiendelea hivi a school principal can do such a vid and say before form 1 selection became computerised, his office was very busy once KCSE was released

Amefanya kazi buana. FYI the Nairobi Inland Container depot has been there since the Moi days, 1984, and was underutilised due to the inefficient 100yr old lunatic rail line but the SGR brought it to life. The waarabu were benefitting from the inefficiency of the lunatic line in evacuating cargo from mombasa to charge importers for storage and truckig of the containers inland.

The same complaints were made when the oil pipeline was built from mombasa to kisumu and eldoret. The muarabus used to control the transportation of the fuel by trucks from the port to the inland.

The bigger picture is that the economy gains by having efficient rails and pipelines since the cost of transportation and handling goes down.

Quote:

Inland Container Depot (ICD) Nairobi
Inland Container Depot Nairobi, owned and operated by Kenya Ports Authority and linked by Rail with Mombasa port provides shippers with dry port facilities in the commercial heart of the country and it was established in 1984. The spacious yard of 29 hectares located in Industrial area off Mombasa Road on ICD Road can accommodate a throughput of over 180,000 TEUS per annum making it ideal for shippers of both Exports and Imports and also Empty containers.

Objective/Goals
The main objective of the ICDN is to bring port services closer to customers in the hinterland through special railtainer service. Our goal is to have a truck turn around within 30min, and wagon turnaround of 2 hrs. 30mins which is our ISO objective (ICDN).

Services offered at ICDN include;-
Handling of both containerized and loose cargo.
Stripping and stuffing of containers.
Consolidation or storage of full/loose export cargo.
Storage and handling of empty containers.
Hire of labour and equipment.
Weighing of containers.
Cargo documentation finalized at ICDN.
Leasing of yard slots to shipping lines and other interested parties for storage of empty containers.
Other stakeholders available at ICD are Government Agencies, Rift Valley Railways, Shipping Agents, Bank, Forwarders, and transporters.

The Nairobi Inland Container Depot has been in operation since 1984. So your argument about Uhuru transferring port activities to an inland port is upus. You should ask Moi why he built the inland port. Uhuru only upgraded the link between the Nairobi ICD and the port. Infact we need more inland ports at Eldoret and Kisumu (just like we have oil depots of oil pumped from mombasa) so that if a businessman in kisumu imports a cargo, he clears the container in kisumu not travelling all the way to mombasa to do that.

Hata kama Uhuru amefabya KAZI,SGR ni product ya Kibaki's administration. Contract to build the SGR was signed in 2011.
