Repurposed Shipping Containers

Kenyans are opening up to the idea of alternative cocoons for dwelling and work.
Our penchant for brick and mortar construction is beginning to see a relative dilution, thanks to the gradual effect of exposure to alternative ways.

Shipping containers offer incredible flexibility and can be put together in an infinite combination of human-centred spaces.
What follows is a study of a home set-up comprising two 40 foot and two 20 foot containers.

Total enclosed areas:
Ground Floor - 68 square metres
First Floor - 28 square metres

Worth considering.

It looks fun but it looks and feels more expensive. I wonder who could give us comprehensive numbers.

You would be better off using bricks.
If it is more than one floor, wouldn't you have made a saving by doing away with steel and concrete that would otherwise go into the slab and columns?
We need a QS to talk us thru this...wouldn't mind trying this myself..

I have been a fun of this method for a long time now. My only concern is it's not as cost effective as we may assume. Cost of shipping containers have gone up sana.
If you want that nice finish, you gonna have to spend.
One thing I love is the speed of works, if you have the ready cash.
All on all if you have a good fabricator, you can pull off one amazing project.
By the way how dies one get to know the history of the container, so you don't end up using one with a record of having carried harmful chemicals or radioactive materials?

Introfart (unajinyambia ndani?) give us numbers. Na hizi nyumba za prefab concrete zinapandishwa in one week kama Unity Homes pale Tatu City ziko stable? They are small homes
The prefab structures are good.
There's one at home that's been standing intact for 35 years.
Let the Mason @RANDY $ and the other guy @shocks chime in regarding costs....(my lucid moments are few, far between and do not last very long.... I am already on my 3rd glass).

Edit :
I'll do a comparative costing, complete with the internal finishes (which gobble up a huge chunk of the project cost).

The containers alone delivered to site will add up 1m.

For simple 3bdr house like this one you will need 4 containers@ retailing 330k delivered to site na bado haujaifanya kitu.... for that amount I can deliver a simple 3bdr house with basic finishes.
@RANDY $ thanks for the feedback; is the house you describe a conventional one ama ni pre-fab?
