Na unajua mbona it was so for cops while other civil servants were being paid thru their bank accounts
Even other civil servants were being paid by their departmental cashiers. Teachers were first to be forced to open accounts but at one time Barclays and Standard Chattered chased them away with high minimum balance demands that they couldn't afford. They moved to KCB where they would fill a slip then wait to be called by loudspeaker. Then Equity came followed by Family and the congestion eased. But the ultimate game changer was the opening of bank branches in mashinani to keep up with Equity.

Damn, my parents were teachers in Nakuru town, I don't remember them going to be paid in a government office.

Barclays and Standard Chattered chased them away with high minimum balance returns demands that they couldn't afford
This one I remember, the din it raised as @Field Marshal says could be heard in mass, even nurses were caught up in this. That one move earned those two institutions two generations of life enemies.
In Nakuru the teachers sacco created a FOSA were salaries could go thru I think via Coop Bank
