I am not a Futurama fan .
This happened last week but I am happy to see a county initiative making masks in this tough Corona times .Hope this is managed well and politics kept away .Whoever will kill this project should be deported to the most hostile place under the sun .
Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said on Wednesday that KICOTEC is among local companies identified by the government to ease the shortage of the preventive gears in the country.
“These local companies have started making face masks and other preventive gears as the government heightens measures to fight the rising number of Covid-19 infections,” said Kagwe.
This maiden venture by the Kitui County Government was presented to the Cabinet Secretary for Health Mutahi Kagwe and Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) samples on Monday for approval and orders.
Similarly, Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu presented the samples to the Managing Director Kenya Bureau of Standards Bernard Njiraini to get the standardization mark of quality.
This move stamps the country’s manufacturing sector as a crucial component in spurring the fledgling economy in the face of the COVID-19 challenges.
The masks and other preventive gears are for use to stop the spread of the dangerous Covid 19 infections.
Njiraini was pleased by the good work that Kitui County is doing in the textile industry and promised to support the young ones working there, saying the quality of work is satisfying.
Making the statement on Monday, Kitui County Governor Charity Ngilu said that KICOTEC has a capacity to make thousands of masks per day.
“Kitui continues to support the fight against spread of the deadly virus and has adopted the Ministry of Health and World Health Organization (WHO) regulations,” said Ngilu.
This venture comes on the backdrop of the passing of Sh 100 million last week Wednesday to the County Ministry of Health and Sanitation by the County Assembly of Kitui to be used to fight Coronavirus.
“This is an unprecedented time in our history as the Covid-19 pandemic is having an impact on people’s health, businesses and global economy as communities face daily disruptions,” she said.
The Governor noted that the lack of masks, gowns, eye-gear among other protective gears is imperiling the ability of medical workers to fight coronavirus and putting their own lives at risk.
“With Covid-19 infections soaring, doctors, nurses and other front line medical workers, KICOTEC has the capacity to upscale the production of masks, surgical gowns and eye gear to protect them from the virus,” said Governor Ngilu.
The County boss disclosed that the supply of protective gears would allay healthcare workers’ fears of exposure to the virus to not only themselves but their families and those around them.
