Sauti sol wanalalamika!

True. And one fee paid to the copyright society allows the payer to play the music of ALL the musicians under the society's umbrella. I think (and this is pure speculation, not fact!) the difference comes when a campaign wants to adopt a song as their theme song.
The artists are all unhappy with MSCK because of the corruption and meagre earnings of ksh 1,200 per year....for a big budget campaign team like azimio and Kenya kwanza going to the same society would be termed as exploitation

If they are unhappy let them get out of the society and inform the public that if you want to play their music deal with them direct. Not harass customers with threats of suits. They could have talked to a lawyer first before kujiabisha.

It is not them that said the 3m but @The.Black.Templar . He is the one I asked to explain how he arrived at that valuation. Has Sauti Sol left the copyright society?

Edit- I think if you overvalue yourself you price yourself out of the market. Azimio are not dying to use Sauti Sol's music, are they?
True. Azimio can decide not to use Sauti Sol music... but the MCSK isn't the publisher, distributor or the copyright holder of Sauti Sol music. Ultimately it's up to the copyright holder to say when and how their work can be used. And I don't believe they should leave the society to regain control of how their music is played in Kenya.

That would really complicate things for MCSK which charges on a one cover for all basis.

The tussle is about Azimio using their soundtrack in a video they did announcing Karua as their DP candidate, to use someone's soundtrack in a your video you can only negotiate with them, the MCSK licence doesn't cover that.
