This was a clumsy hasty rescue gone bad.

The crane was able to raise the thermos but the lack of balance made it swing about and scrape against the asphalt. It sounds like one of the nipples used to fill or evacuate the tank broke off, releasing that cloud of deadly gas. Just one spark was needed for disaster: a starting engine a hot exhaust, etc.
