Detectives from the elite Operations Support Unit have nabbed Steve Okoth Odek, alias David Bett, in a comedy of errors involving a jaw-dropping USD 256,000 heist with 1080kg of what turned out to be gloriously fake gold. Here's the kicker: the poor victim got duped not once, but twice! In a double whammy of gold deals gone wrong, our hapless investor agreed to buy 500kg of gold on February 6th, 2024, and then, because clearly once wasn’t enough, another 580kg on March 14th, 2024. Each kilogram was tagged at a measly USD 256, with current world gold prices hovering at about USD 80,000 per kilogram. Talk about golden dreams!
But wait, there's more. After the scammer failed to deliver the first 500 Kg of gold as promised, he was smooth enough to convince the victim to buy an additional 580 kg. This time round, the scammer promised that it would be different, provided the buyer catered for jet chartering, taxes, and insurance. Unsurprisingly, no gold showed up. By this point, the victim, still blissfully clueless, had shelled out a total of USD 256,000 through two law firms, Owano & Associates Advocates ($126,000) and Alata & Co. Advocates ($139,200).
You would think the scammer would have had his fill at this point. But you would be wrong. He had the audacity to attempt squeezing another USD 188,080 from the victim. To entice victim through a show of good faith, our scam artist even handed over 20kg of "gold bars" for safekeeping at MySafe Vault. Unfortunately, by then, the jig was up, and the police were on the case. The detectives, working tirelessly, retrieved the "gold bars," which, after a thorough analysis, turned out to be a delightful blend of copper, zinc, and tin—no gold in sight.
Adding color to this fraudulent masterpiece, the investigators discovered that PCL Natural Resources Limited, the company behind the scam, wasn't even licensed to trade in gold or any precious metals. With this nugget of truth, they tracked down and arrested Steve Okoth Odek, putting an end to his not-so-golden scheme.
