Well in the colonial economy, the first people who were employed in the formal colonial economy used to earn their wage every month.
After that they would go into the townships and indulge in all manner of decadence both in terms food and alcohol. So the next day, they would have serious diarrhea from their nightly indiscretions. “Hara” in Swahili means diarrhea.
So the morning after, when the colonial overseer ushered them to work, he would ask them; “Mshahara?” Translation: Have you already diarrhead? And that’s why salary came to be called, Mshahara. So the people with paychecks; have you diarrhead?
