There's what was called Levirate Marriage in Jewish customs. This is akin to wife inheritance, only that the children you sire with the late brother's widow are taken to be his.
Why onan poured outside was because he was greedy since any son born from the act would have automatically acquired firstborn's right to a double share of inheritance as per the customs.
