Ukraine - Russia War 2 years on

This week marks the second anniversary of the start of the bloodiest war in Europe since WWII.
Here are my thoughts, as well as some key events that have marked the war.

1. Feb 2022, Putin sent 190k soldiers to Kyiv and Eastern Ukraine. The special military operation was aimed at forcing Kiyv to the negotiating table not conquering Ukraine. Anybody who knows about WWII knows that Germany used 1.5 Million soldiers to conquer Poland. So no way 190k soldiers could conquer a country three times bigger than Poland.

2. It's Putin who withdrew his forces from Kiyv as a sign of goodwill after the two sides had reached an agreement in Istanbul. Boris Johnson however went to Kiev and told them to fight on since the West believed Ukraine could hold and the sanctions could cripple Russia.

3. In Sep 2022, Russia withdrew from parts of captured territory(Kharkiv and Kherson ) after finding its forces overstretched. It did not have sufficient troops to defend all the Ukrainian territory it controlled. Consequently, Putin mobilized about 300k soldiers.

4. Nov 2022, Russia scaled up an effort to capture Bakhmut. The two sides engaged in a long and grinding battle for control of that city, which finally ended with a Russian victory in late May 2023. While Ukraine claimed to inflict significant casualties on Russia at a ratio of 1:7 this was far from the truth. Russians managed to seize the flanks and encircle the city, hence disrupting supply/evacuation routes. Instead of withdrawing their forces, Ukraine sent their most elite forces to save the situation. Consequently, the most skilled and motivated soldiers were exchanged for Wagner soldiers mostly recruited from prisons. General Syrski who was behind this catastrophic mistake was recently promoted to the rank of Commander in Chief. It is estimated that each side lost more than 50k soldiers during this fight. While the 'Western Analysts' described Bakhmut as strategically unimportant, I believe the main goal of this offensive was to buy time for Russia to build its defense lines.

5. June 2023: Ukraine launched its counter-offensive to take back the land occupied by Russians. The plan was to punch a large hole in Russia’s defensive lines and then drive deep into Russian-controlled territory, not only capturing territory along the way, but delivering a hammer blow to the Russian army. In the first 2wks of the much-awaited offensive, NYTimes reported Ukraine lost more than 20% of the equipment meant for this offensive. The operation was a failure, which ended in Sep 2023.

6. Oct 2023: Russia launched a large-scale operation to capture a city called Adviivka. So while the Russians took heavy casualties during the initial days of the offensive, the city fell into Russians last Saturday after the hasty withdrawal of Ukraine defenders. There are reports of more than 1000 UA soldiers being captured or killed during the last day of retreat.

Btw, Russia has some of the most stupid Generals on earth. I don't know....maybe it's the soviet doctrine to go for what you want regardless of the cost. I have watched videos of Russian columns getting annihilated after driving on mines that anybody with eyes can see. Just yesterday, more than 100 soldiers were killed in training near the front line. In a war where everything is being monitored by your opponent, it was idiotic to assemble hundreds of soldiers at such a location.

Wewe unamaliswo na bandits and here you are talking about russian generals? Haven't they have achieved their objectives of gaining territory?

Biden sponsored war. This could have ended much earlier, after only a month and the massive loss of lives prevented. But biden and his people know they will never be asked to go to the frontlines

Right now, Ukrainian men are being forcefully conscripted. There are videos all over the internet showing men forcefully ejected from buses, trains etc to join the army. But the narrative being peddled is Ukrainians want to defend their land to the last man

The dynamics of the two wars are like night and day so I don't know where anyone would start making comparisons.

My view is that this war will be stretched as long as shooting means money in the bank for Americans. Just this week I read somewhere that a North Korean made missile, fired by Russians against Ukrainians, had United States components.

"Russia's War in Ukraine
Fragments of the missile recovered by the Ukrainian armed forces and analyzed by Ukrainian researchers found numerous components made by U.S. manufacturers in the missile's onboard navigation system, which enabled it to reach its target with devastating precision."

It seems you have been consuming a lot of pro ukrainian blogs who paint russian Army as inept, indisciplined and drunk on whisky even on the battle front. The truth is if you are attacking a well defended town city or territory, the odds are always stacked against you. There is no formula of taking a defended area without colossal loss of personnel and equipment.

While I agree with you, fact is you need a lot of infantry to conquer a country like Ukraine, which had more than 350k soldiers at the beginning of war, and who were armed and trained by US for 10yrs( conquering Ukraine and recreating a larger Russia is a narrative that has been created by the Western media since the beginning of thr war.)

It seems the main goal of this war is to wear down the enemy's infantry, equipment etc, to the point where it either quits the fight or is so weakened that it can no longer defend contested territory.
To win this war will depend on who has more population (turned soldiers), and who has more artillery (to inflict more pain/death)
Russia has a 5:1 advantage in both cases. So while this war will take years to end, Ukraine will end up being destroyed.

Mid last year the EU had pushed the comedian to agree to a negotiated end to the war but murika provided more weapons. The EU had no desire to go to another winter with uncertainties about Russian gas supplies.

Nah... it's either you didn't read everything I wrote or you didn't comprehend what I have written. Why shld any competent general send tanks(with no mining equipment) to a minefield that can be seen with visible eyes?
In this war, even assembling 3 soldiers along the front line has proven to be risky because they'll be an easy target by a single drone. But on Wednesday, a fool assembled hundreds of them.

But why did they send an outgoing PM Boris Johnson to scuttle a peace deal that would have prevented the war in the first place? Europe should have known better given that they are neighbours with the Russians, as opposed to Americans who are a whole ocean away. Now America is the primary aggressor in the conflict yet is the most separated from its effects

Remember its happening on both sides. Ukraine army during the beginning of their failed counter offensive in summer drove 10s of tanks across fields full of mines with the express advice of Americans. They soon realised Russia had triple stacked the mines. Even their minesweepers were blown into smithereens. Results? As much as 10% 0f their donated mechanised equipment was lost within a week, but you are right, it's foolish to assemble that many fighters in a small area so close to the frontline.

At least Ukraine learnt from its mistakes. No more meat waves. Just yesterday, Russia shot down its A50 reconnaissance aircraft, weeks after downing the first one. This plane detects air defences and co-ordinates targets for Russian jets, can cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build.
There were only 8 A50s in russia before the war. It also doesn't fly within the range of Ukraine air defence, which shows how valuable the plane is. You can see these generals don't learn.
