Things you should know before applying for a job

Job hunting is the most humbling task an unemployed human can ever go through. Your mailbox is always full of 'thanks in advance' and 'looking forward to your reply'. People in Kenya are looking for jobs and a report showed that 7.5 million Kenyans are unemployed.

Here are things a job seeker must know before applying for a job;

1. Update your social media profile

Your Social Media pages including LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook should be clean.

Employers in Kenya have started looking at Social Media pages of their employees and people seeking to join their company. After they receive your application, the second thing they do is search for your profile and see what you have been up to.

Before sending your application, ensure your Social Media pages have what you think your employer should see. Youths are fond of posting abusive content on their pages which cost them opportunities in life.

2. Check the background of the company

The most important thing is knowing more about the company you wish to join, do more research about what they do, their mission and vision and their location. Knowing more about the company helps you answer questions correctly during your interview in case you are shortlisted.

3. Reach out to current employees

While doing your research about the company you wish to join, you can reach out to someone who is currently working at the company or someone who has been there. This will help you network and find yourself in the company. Get their mobile number or email address and keep asking questions that would help you get the job, don't forget to keep in touch.

4. Update your CV and cover letter

Ensure you get the correct address of the company you are seeking to join, their location and telephone numbers for the sake of a cover letter. Use simpler and correct grammar including the correct format of a cover letter.

In your CV, include all the places you have worked with your experiences starting with your most recent experience and place of work.

5. Contact your referees

Inform your referees of the vacancy or vacancies you are applying for. This will help them prepare well in order to vouch for you when they are contacted via email or phone call. Ensure the contacts you submit are still working don't embarrass yourself by submitting an outdated contact of your referees.
