7 Positive Coronavirus Stories and Developments to Help You Lighten Up

1, 2
Though positive news stories have largely been buried under an avalanche of statistics, news, and ongoing updates about the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) lately, they are still out there.
It might seem that cheerful stories have been few and far between of late, but even in the direst of circumstances, there is often a silver lining.
Here are some positive developments related to COVID-19 that might point towards a light at the end of the tunnel for all of the people in quarantine, confinement, and those infected by the coronavirus that has the majority of the world in lockdown.

1. On March 19, China reported zero new domestic cases of coronavirus infection
China yesterday reported no new cases of domestic coronavirus infections, for the first time since the beginning of the outbreak. The 34 infections diagnosed on Wednesday in China, and reported today, were in people that arrived in the country from abroad, the National Health Commission said.

This is a significant, positive development in the country, where citizens have been in lockdown since January 23rd. Hopefully, it is also a sign of things to come for the rest of the world.
2. In Venice, locals are reporting they can see fish in the canals for the first time in years
The water of the canals in Venice is clearer ever since the COVID-19 coronavirus has put a halt to tourism in the famous city. Over the past few years, the city has been struggling to deal with overcrowding and pollution caused largely by tourism.
This has resulted in the city's canals becoming murky due to pollution. Now, videos and images are emerging of the canals, showing that the water has become crystal clear.

It's not just Venice that has seen big changes. In Italy, where drastic lockdown measures were put in place following a spike in COVID-19 cases, a video has surfaced of dolphins at the port of Cagliari, swans have been seen in the waters of Milan, and other wildlife returning to areas that were previously uninhabitable.

As one commenter on social media put it, perhaps "this isn't an apocalypse. It's an awakening."
3. Air pollution and global CO2 levels are going down dramatically
Air pollutants and warming gases over cities worldwide have gone down dramatically since the COVID-19 coronavirus started to impact work and travel.
As the BBC reports, researchers in New York say "early results show that carbon monoxide, mainly from cars, has been reduced by almost 50 percent compared with last year in the typically traffic-heavy city."

CO2 emissions have also dropped dramatically. Scientists predict that by May, when CO2 emissions are typically at their peak due to the decomposition of leaves, the levels recorded will be the lowest since the financial crisis over a decade ago.
As the image above from NASA also shows, levels of nitrous dioxide — a noxious polluting gas emitted by power plants, industrial facilities, and transport vehicles — has also fallen dramatically.
mother earth is finally being given a moment to breathe
just wanted to show you guys a picture of my second home :) this is where everyone in my family before me grew up, and where i have spent countless childhood summers. i’ve never actually seen those mountains from there. this makes me so happy.

As tweeter @hell0pia explains, you can even see the Tatra mountains from Kraków now due to the smog lifting in the city.
4. Vaccine trials are already underway
On March 16, the first human was injected with an "investigational" vaccine as part of the U.S.'s human trials for a coronavirus vaccine.
Though it is a promising step towards developing a vaccine for preventing infection from the COVID-19, public health officials still say it will take a year to a year and a half to fully test and develop any vaccine.
This is because it is important to rigorously test whether the vaccine might have any adverse side effects that could affect large parts of the global population.

The first-ever injection of the investigational vaccine for the COVID-19 coronavirus happened in Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute (KPWHRI), the institute reported in a statement.

5. The U.S. has signed a big relief package deal
Governments worldwide, including the U.S., are passing unprecedented laws to help citizens affected by the ongoing pandemic. In the United States, President Trump signed into law a bill that ensures paid leave benefits to many Americans. It is part of a wide-randing aid package that will help those struggling with the current situation.
As The Washington Post reports, the legislation also promises free coronavirus testing to anyone, including people who are uninsured. The bill also increases health funding across the U.S.
In the U.K., the government has announced a temporary complete ban on evictions, as well as additional protection for renters and homebuyers, including a 3-month pause on mortgage payments.
In Spain, meanwhile, a petition calling on the government to temporarily halt freelance social security payments — which go up to almost €300 monthly, and have to be paid regardless of income — has over 300,000 signatures.

6. Some drugs are already showing promise as a cure
Medical authorities in China have claimed that a drug, called favipiravir, which was developed in Japan to treat new strains of influenza appears to be an effective form of treatment for coronavirus patients.
The news comes after clinical trials, involving 340 patients, in Wuhan and Shenzhen, The Guardian reports.
“It has a high degree of safety and is clearly effective in treatment,” Zhang told reporters this week.

Patients who were given the medicine turned negative for the virus after a media of four days after becoming positive. That's compared with the median of 11 days for those not treated with the drugs, according to public broadcaster NHK.
What's more, X-rays taken of the patients confirmed improvements in lung condition in about 91% of the patients treated with favipiravir, compared to 62% in those that didn't take the drug. However, researchers do warn that the drug doesn't seem to be as effective in cases that are already severe.

In Australia, researchers are starting clinical trials for what they claim could be a cure for COVID-19. The scientists at the University of Queensland say that Chloroquine, an anti-malarial drug, and HIV-suppressing combination lopinavir/ritonavir have both shown promising results in human tests where the virus 'disappeared' in infected patients.
7. It's bringing out the best in people
In difficult moments people come together, help each other out, and show a sense of solidarity that is often missing in calmer times — despite some ugly, unwanted scenes related to supermarket stockpiling, this has overwhelmingly been the case in people's reactions to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
In Italy, which has been one of the worst affected countries by the pandemic, whole communities have come together to sing songs and play instruments from their es.

People of my hometown #Siena sing a popular song from their houses along an empty street to warm their hearts during the Italian #Covid_19 #lockdown.#coronavirusitalia #COVID19 #coronavirus

In Spain, citizens started a tradition of clapping from their balconies for the nurses, doctors, and other healthcare workers working hard to fight to help those who are ill.

This is Spain. At 22.00h, citizens went to their balconies to give an applause to all professionals who are working extra hard these days to keep everyone safe & well, from health workers to cashiers & truck drivers. What a beautiful country we are when we stand together

Examples of communities coming together to help each other out — while keeping a safe distance — have been spreading through social media; whether it's kids offering to go shopping for local elderly neighbors, or teams of engineers coming together to 3D print much-needed respirators

There's good in everything, it's our choice to look for the good.
This is the so called rest button the world needed as we were spiraling down a very capitalist road.

All these are great news apart from number 1. Naah, that's not true. China hid this thing until it couldn't any more. Now they are back to being themselves when the microscope has been taken off them.

who hid it more? who is even now referring to the virus as the chinese virus in order to deflect attention from the goofs they have made in handling the virus including dreaming that chloroquine can treat the virus?

It's not a matter of who hid it more. It's a matter of whoever hides anything about this is outright wrong. China hid it till it became an outbreak. Drumpf tried to downplay it but was slapped by the reality. Both wrong. I'm not sure obout other figures from known waongos like Russia, but it comes a time when the so called pride has to be swallowed and accept. It's no longer about a country trying to look good.

@Mwalimu-G and @Ule Msee I think this virus is that reality check, like a pregnancy, you can't hide it for ever, whether it was legitimate or illegitimate.
From history of things we can't trust the white man, if he was able to bring down a whole twin towers just to justify a war in the middle east, where evidence of weapons of mass destruction was never found!

I would like to imagine how patient zero can present himself with a previously unknown disease (but whose symptoms are like those of flu -quite common during winter - or pneumonia) at Subukia Level Four Hospital only to be given the normal treatment for flu. It would take an observant medic to observe that patients with the unusual disease are increasing and raise an alarm with his superiors. That takes time. The authorities would then dispatch a team to confirm before they report to WHO. I do not think the Chinese wanted to hide anything.

The first medic who identified it (may he rip) and tried to inform the authorities, was reprimanded. Yes, they tried to hide it.

It's not like it is the first time Chinese authorities tried to hide some disaster just to look good. Remember te time they tried to clean up a gory train accident? Trying to bury the bodies with the train wreck? That's Chinese authorities way of operation.

There are myths of life in China as propagated by Americans and there are realities. It is true the Chinese communist party likes order...and will enforce it because relaxing would result in a poorer quality of life for all. It is true they manage information. But I would advise you to take whatever you hear about china with a pinch of salt.

I would really like to agree with you bro, but China isn't what you think it is.
-Tiananmen Square manenos,
-Wenzhou train collision coverup including others,
-Uighurs prison camps for people who defy,

All this info isn't even from the west including trumpistan. Hong Kong protests were because they don't want to be ruled by CCP because they know it's like North Korea trying to take over South Korea. If you've done biz with a Chinese guy, try and mention any of the above names, and see how it's a taboo to even mention.
When you include the massive bans and social media restrictions, what is China hiding?

I especially like your last sentence. You have told me something I know very well coz I once lived in China not too long ago.
On the Uyghur question, China faces a real and present danger of disintegration fueled by those who do not wish her well. It is just like the secessionist attempt by somais on our country in the 1960s and 70s. While the Uyghur claim right to self determination as per the UN charter, China also claims the right to fight for her territorial integrity. You and I know giving way to the Uyghur would give impetus to other territories and autonomous regions to break away and what would remain of China?
it is 20 years since Tiananmen, 20 years that have seen China implement reforms that have brought her to be one of the super powers in the world. The leadership is fully aware of the risk of the country falling into anarchy, and back to ruin when people couldn't even get enough to eat.

How can that possibly be good news? I'd rather see that shosho for the first time in years than see some fish and birds.

Ati "usijali shosho yako alibebwa na kohozi, lakini cheki mitaro zimejaa samaki bana!"

A few things I disagree with here. The fact that CCM still thinks in terms territorial is already obsolete in this time and age. China is currently not so much a super power as you say, but it is operating like someone with hands tied behind your back, because of an authoritative government. Just like Hong Kong is way ahead of mainland China, or South Korea is ahead of North. Same people, different regimes, different outcomes. You think that if the people would be let to have their free will, they'll not find stuff to eat? No, these people are some of the most brightest on this planet. Actually I would say they would become THE superpower, US would seem like a toddler. If they can achieve as much as they have now, what if they didn't have an authoritative regime? Again I'll go back to the difference between north and south Korea, miles apart. We don't have a south China to compare to, but I would bet that it would be a lot more advanced without a stupid government. China is still a country which still has concentration camps. The minimal footage that has managed to get out is still at the least disgusting. China has some of the best comp savvy fellas, but operating under its Great Firewall. The globally available social media companies are not available in mainland China, they use their own. These limitations and yet they are on the world map.

What have we gained for using facebook and twitter? illusions. I rest my case.

Edit: The mainland China of Today is not the one of 1989. China is opening up to the world....but in a managed way so that sudden change is not disruptive to the country.
China is ruled by the CCP but it is not a cpllection of backward collectivised farms worked with scythes.

@Mwalimu-G stop arguing with a troll......

@Ule Msee Are you honestly proclaiming that a country aiming to control how the entire world thinks, acts and trades, is LESS AUTHORITARIAN than a country that limits its restrictions WITHIN ITS own borders?

Dude, do you have comprehension issues? At which point did I claim who is more authoritarian or less than the other?? Is it a competition about who among them has done more wrong? Ati yes, these guys have done more wrong than the others? No! They are all wrong. Go back and read slowly..

@Mwalimu-G stop arguing with a troll......
Anyway, call me a troll or whatever floats
your boat, the fact remains you can't claim how clean the Chinese authorities are considering many of their past actions. Their figures still remain questionable. Same case about the US, the big baby had to swallow his pride and admit to the reality. Argue with points without resulting to call anyone with a different view a troll.
