It was never a precursor to the Tuktuk. Rather, it was a contemporary of the Tuktuk, which started life in post-war Italy as the Piaggio Ape in 1947.

A number of them opted for three-wheelers, which was a natural choice given their low production and running costs. The three-wheelers were especially prolific in Japan, and later became the popular marques Japan is well known for today.
