I doubt most do this. I heard KFC imported their own chicken at some point in the past though. Even in these cases, the net effect is positive. Employment created, rents paid, transportation, all sorts of cottage industries that spring up around these.. etcMore like the owner of the capital pockets.
Most of the multinationals operating in Kenya, buy their raw materials outside the country, so that they overprice it and thus declare losses, thereby avoid paying taxes.
China would be a good self-contained example to study. The communist revolution by Mao brought about extreme poverty and famine and many suffered and died. But once they liberalized their economy they started growing really fast. They had to abandon communist economic ideas to thrive.
