I am almost peed in my trousers leo after an encounter with the boys some minutes after 12 am. I had a chaotic day travel-wise in Mombasa and ended up boarding a 7-seater van jana at around 4 pm. SGR was not an option since it was fully booked for the next 48 hours. KQ was charging almost 20k for one-way from Mombasa - Nairobi . The likes of Tahmeed , Dreamline, Mash, Coast Bus, and Busscar were fully booked. I called a Senior Senator for some travel advice since he is conversant with Mombasa akaniambia ni check the 7 seater option hapo karibu na stage ya Tahmeed .
Fare was 3k I paid bila kusumbua and at around twenty past 4 pm we departed. At around 8:30 pm we were pale Rawji restaurant - Mtito Andei for 20 minutes stop and later proceeded with the journey. Kufika saa nne nika doze and woke up many kilometres later tukiwa hapa Kyumvi . I was at first confused pahali tulikuwa but on checking google maps and kuona start of dual carriageway nika changa mka. Few minutes later gari ilikuwa nyuma ika flash headlights . Since i was seated at the rear seat nikaturn to check but I couldn't identify the vehicle clearly. Our van driver changed lanes from left to right . Seconds later the vehicle was accelerated and was now slightly ahead kwa left lane and behold it was the dreaded Subaru Forester . Their windows were down and started hand signaling us to stop.
Wueh sema ku tense by this time tuko almost Simba cement .The van driver was hesitant at first but we all knew there was no way we could outrun a Forester in a Honda StepWGN with 8 adults .We convinced the driver to stop and we did just that hapo karibu na Simba Cement gate mbele ya forester. At that moment we were not sure kama ni wezi or undercover police. Two men walked out and walked to the van one on each side mmoja with a base ball cap and the over ako na marvin hat . We could see them clearly since hapo Simba cement the place is well lit .Nikajua hapa iko shida .They checked the insurance asked a few questions including kwa nini tulikuwa tuna kosa kusimama hapo kwa start ya dual carriage . The driver told them hakuwa ameona being signalled to stop ,tukamulikwa na and the three lady passengers started explaining sisi ni abiria and we are from Mombasa heading to Nairobi . All this time niko kiti ya nyuma sandwiched between two passengers. The few seconds in real life felt like an eternity, deep down I was hoping no person in the vehicle was a wanted criminal and wished the driver wouldn't pull a silly stunt like driving off . Knowing these guys I knew wakisema tushuke I would just be a dead body laying on a tarmac within a few seconds. After they got convinced by the explanation wakasema tunaweza enda . I was so shaken I could even turn kuwa angalia as we drove off. So many thoughts crossed my mind and i think that will be the last time natumia those vans to travel at night this also applies to the ones plying Kisumu - Nairobi route.
