The government has announced that the current National Identification Cards (ID) will cease being in operation by December 12, 2021, adding that the ID cards will be replaced by Huduma Namba cards.
President of the Law Society of Kenya Nelson Havi now says the move is unlawful since the National ID Act has not been amended in the current constitution.
He says that the National ID Card is an identification document issued under Section 9 of Registration of Persons Act adding that the Act has not been repealed or amended to enable substitution of ID Cards with Huduma Cards linked to Mastercard as directed by CS Mucheru.
The Huduma Namba card was launched in Kisii county by President Kenyatta in October during the Mashujaa day celebrations. The President and First Lady were issued with a copy of the card.
