Ngong Road gets dualled, but there are too many glaring mistakes that even pedestrians, both literal and figurative, can notice. It seems like the designers were trying too hard to preserve the course of the old road while adding a new lane. The result; a road with too many bends and transitions in unexpected places, making driving a nightmare, especially for drivers unfamiliar with the road.
On Sunday 20th February, a town-bound vehicle with seven passengers plunges into one of the gaping spaces, killing 4 people. These spaces have been a danger to drivers who are not aware that the road narrows at the bridge.

What makes road fatalities undramatic is the 'absence' of victims. Victims are often quoted as number of people, compressing everything that defined them into a figure, yet these people represent much more than the accident figures. A man or woman who dies in a traffic accident represents a lost parent to some kid, lost motherly care, lost provider etc. What's painful is that a majority of accidents are preventable if the society resolved to make our roads safer.
The two individuals below were possibly victims of the Ng'ong Road accident. When you see their names, they stop being just numbers and become loses to families and friends.
Edmon Hassan Owino (Eddie)
It is with humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce the sudden promotion to glory of Edmon Hassan Owino [Eddie], that occurred by way of a road accident along Ngong’ Road, Nairobi on 20th February, 2022.
Eddie was a son to William Ochieng Owinoh of the Kenya Embassy Tel Aviv, Israel and Zaitun Hassan of Global Institute of Management, Nairobi, brother to Advocate Pius Owino, Rehema, Linda, Amos, Angela, Euphemia & Henzella.
Grandson to Mr Zebedi Owinoh Ogonda & the late Angelina Owinoh. Nephew to George, James, Jennifer & Christine (all deceased), Rose, Addah and Andrew all of Ahono village, Gem Constituency, Siaya County and Grandson to Hassan Mwadali and Rehema Talu (both deceased). Nephew to Jumaa (deceased), Ayub Shaka, Fatuma, Salim, Khadija and Mahmoud all of Ndome, Taita Taveta County and beloved by countless scores of relatives and friends.
Family and Friends are meeting daily for prayers and burial arrangements at his parents’ house at Maku Villas, Makueni Road – Kileleshwa every evening from 6.00pm. The body will be picked at Umash Funeral Home at 1.30pm, for a memorial service at NOMIYA Church, Eastleigh Section 3, Opposite Sun City Cinema on Thursday 3rd March, 2022.
The church is scheduled for 3.00pm after which the body will be taken to the parents house in Kilileshwa for overnight vigil. The body will be flown to Kisumu from Wilson Airport at 11.30 am on Friday 4th March, 2022.
The burial shall take place on Saturday 5th March, 2022, at his parents’ home in Ahono village, Marenyo Sub-location, Gem Constituency, Siaya County.
Catherine Achayo Mbandu
It is with humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce the passing on of Catherine Achayo Mbandu on the morning of Sunday 20th February 2022 through a tragic road accident on Ngong’ Road.
Catherine was a born-again Christian who loved the Lord God from childhood. Until her demise, she was working as a Quality Assurance Manager at Bfree Credit Management Limited. She was the daughter of Rev. Captain Martin Mbandu and Pastor Rachael of Christ is the Answer Ministries (CITAM).
A granddaughter of the late Mr & Mrs Mbandu and the late Mr & Mrs Begisen. She was a sister to Marvin, Sheldon, Loice and Sarah Mbandu. Niece to, the Late Konga, Ann Mukwambo, Esther Kweya, Rhoda Mbandu, Caleb Kutai and Joshua Namukai, the late Margaret Kibisu, Edith Imbwaga, Pst. Beatrice Mbaya, John Begisen, Darlene Mise, Fridah Kiarie, Ebby Eyase, Robert Begisen, Phylis Odari and Charles Begisen. Cousin to the Mbandus and the Begisens.
