Two months later after transplanting, bulbs are now visible and it's time to sort them to ensure quality bulbs .
Adding calcium and potassium fertilizer during the bulbing stage of bulb onions is crucial for the following reasons:
Calcium
1. Strengthens Cell Walls: Calcium helps in the formation of strong cell walls, ensuring the onions have a firm structure and a longer shelf life.
2. Prevents Bulb Splitting: Adequate calcium reduces the chances of bulb splitting and cracking, which improves market quality.
3. Enhances Disease Resistance: Strengthened cell walls make the plant more resistant to diseases like soft rot and fungal infections.
Potassium
1. Boosts Bulb Size: Potassium is essential for energy transfer and carbohydrate metabolism, which leads to better bulb formation and larger sizes.
2. Improves Flavor and Color: It enhances the quality of the bulb by improving its flavor, color, and aroma.
3. Regulates Water Use: Potassium aids in efficient water uptake and retention, which is vital for a healthy bulbing process.
4. Increases Shelf Life: Proper potassium levels improve the storage quality of the onions, reducing shrinkage and spoilage during storage.
Applying these nutrients at the right time ensures better yields, higher quality bulbs, and increased profitability.
You get this from Fertilizers like Yara winner.
I visited this farm which we had transplanted the same time and uses rainhose irrigation system, The bulbs were also visible.
This is a result that comes all the way from transplanting.
Bulb onion seedlings should be transplanted less than an inch so that when they start bulbing ,they will be on top of the soil and in globe shape.
Planting too deeps makes the bulbs bottle shape .
