Burial is a foreign thing to Gikuyus, and most African groups I think.

And sometimes someone would crawl from the bush back to the village. That's the origin of names like Kariuki and Njoki.
 
I already wanted a wicker coffin and thought cremation was a good idea. I didn't realise it polluted so much. I wonder what's the greenest way to go.

Apologies, I meant to say funeral rites, not burial. I remember reading something about spiritual elevation in Leakey's book. Nikipata nitawapostia.

But yes, most of the dead would "bury themselves". The body was after all considered to be a vessel for the spirit.
