Nairobi as a Safe Haven

This article on DN just scratches the surface of the dealings and number of foreign criminals residing in quiet leafy suburbs of Nairobi like Riverside, Karen,Kilimani etc where everybody minds his/her own business. This guy wouldn't have been in court had it not been for those two Bingwas and Njoki kushine macho.

The majority of these criminals are from the former Soviet republics. A good example are the owners of SportPesa. Waliishi na starehe and even forgot kucheza chini. Yes they put Karauri as the face of their empire but once in a while they couldn't resist the urge ya kutuonyesha nani wenye kampuni on seeing the former KQ pilot amekuja sana with his flamboyancy.

Short Hekaya.

One time my two friends and I were invited to a party at Riverside drive. The sister to one of my friends was having a small party at her place na ndio alitualika. The magnificent mansion was situated on a slope inateremka hadi kwa river next to Arboretum. The hubby was a mzungu. A Bulgarian. He went all the way to Elgeiyo Marakwet, dusted vumbi off her legs and brought her to Nairobi. Ni kama alikua amepewa heads up ya Kabete women. Dem na yeye hakubaki nyuma. She got accustomed to the finer things in life chapchap.

Back to the story. Sisi tumekujia nyamchom with a fat warges lady in tow. Alcohol was halal for her coz alikua anamimina whisky kama maziwa. So this bulgarian guy too had his friends over and most times they were talking in their Bulgarian language. That was the first time i smoked a cigar. I never smoke but seeing how those guys were holding a glass and a cigar with one hand as they sipped whisky ilifanya nikaitisha moja. Na kwa ujinga yangu I inhaled hadi kwa lungs. Turns out cigar smoke shouldn't go past the windpipe. It gets absorbed by the lining of the mouth.

We tried striking a conversation with them lakini they weren't thaaat interested. Some replies in broken english hapa na pale halafu wanarudi kwa lugha yao. In a drunken stupor, one of the bulgarian friends described to us how easy it was to withdraw money from an ATM with your own card in a way where the machine rolls outs a lot more cash than what the receipt will say. Sijawai jaribu to this day but i think it works. Meanwhile, this other friend of mine was trying hard to impress the warges. He spoke some russian to the girl and deliberately did it so that the bulgarians could hear. Their family once lived in Russia as the dad was a diplomat there. Then everything went silent. Majamaa wakaanza kuturushia macho na ubaya. They mumbled some Bulgarian words and then asked him where he learnt russian and the nature of his job. From then on the tone became unfriendly and we were forced to seperate. Into the house we went, but before nyamchom was served this guy's sister came and told us that mzee ako moods mbaya na amesema tujitoe. If it weren't for her, tungerusha matusi ya kutosha.

About two months later Kip told us jamaa ako ndani. Apparently, he defrauded a bank and wired millions to a foreign account. He was deported soon after.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is how a very young lady ended up with a mansion worth hundred of millions in a leafy suburb.
