The democrats have been pushing an extremist narrative that Trump should not win at all costs. That he will destroy their democracy. They have the media, Hollywood, govt apparatus like the fbi etc. That is bound to radicalize many young people. The shooter may have probably thought he's going to be a hero for taking out Trump. You can find clips of many voluntarily recording themselves being very disappointed that he missed.
