My Full-Time Farming Journey: From Capsicum Success to a Tough Lesson

When I decided to fully embrace farming, I was optimistic about growing green capsicum (hoho). I chose the superbell variety for its disease resistance and hard, deep-green fruits. With 1.5 acres and over 10,000 seedlings per acre, I was ready to take on my biggest farming project .

My crop thrived, and I started harvesting 17 bags of capsicum per session, feeling like a king. By the second and third harvests, I was consistently reaping over 40 bags. It felt like a jackpot.

I had timed my peak harvest for Christmas, expecting high prices. Unfortunately, so had everyone else. The price droped from Ksh 50 to Ksh 10 per kilo. On December 24th, I loaded a truck full of produce, only to sell 7 bags. The rest ended up in my compost pit.

This experience taught me never to rely on high-demand seasons like Christmas. Instead, I learned the importance of growing crops like onions for less crowded seasons, like when schools are in session and also crops that can be stored.
