Uganda made it to world headlines recently when it was announced that the country had uncovered huge gold deposits (estimated at 13 trillion dollars worth) in the country's eastern region. In an unexpected move, president Museveni declared that the gold would not be exploited under the usual production sharing arrangements, where the country would earn less than 1 percent in royalties. In its place, he wants Uganda to pocket 10 trillion, leaving the remainder 3 trillion for the investor. Well, he may not get the 10 trillion, but what he gets won't be a measly 1 percent. On the whole, he wants the country to earn more than the investors, which should ideally be the case everywhere. This is the kind of thinking that made Maghufuli very unpopular with Western capital.
