Media houses lose twitter blue tick, parody accounts stream in

On April 20, Twitter CEO Elon Musk fulfilled his promise by doing away with the verification checkmarks for accounts that haven't subscribed to Twitter Blue.

Twitter Blue, which costs approximately Sh1,480 will enable an account to have the verification mark, edit tweets, and post long content of up to 1,000 words from the original 280.

Citizen TV, Nation Africa, The Star Kenya, Mpasho, and Standard are among the accounts affected by the new measures.

Hours after the blue checkmarks were gone, parody accounts streamed in. With the accounts posting fake news, as far as 'killing' people.

The original page for Citizen TV has spent the better part of today flagging fake news posted on parody accounts, the lasted being that allegation of the death of Royal Media Services owner SK Macharia

Another person has also created a Nation breaking accounting alleging that Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has resigned and appointed her husband as acting governor.

With all these, to avoid impersonation, the media houses will now have to pay for the blue check mark to avoid the fake news that's going around.

Twitter is yet to release a statement on how it will solve the parody accounts and spread of fake news as the move might bring more harm than good.

A lot of celebrities have also lost the checkmark, including football star Cristiano Ronaldo, NBA star Lebron James, Actress Lupita Nyongo, Media personality Larry Madowo, and Arsiste Davido among others
