Today, 3st June 2022, is a holiday in Uganda known as Martyrs' day. This day commemorates the execution of 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican Christian converts in the Buganda Kingdom between 1885 and 1887, on the orders of Mwanga II, the reigning King of Buganda at the time. The irony of this commemoration is that it sort of vilifies King Mwanga II for protecting his people against the influences of a foreign religion while sympathizing with a group whose actions would destroy his community. Arguably, had Christianity been nipped in the bud at this point, maybe colonization would have had fewer avenues to transgress the cultural ways of his community. Stretching the same reasoning, it is possible that the Baganda would have remained grounded in their culture much longer, averting the aids epidemic that very nearly wiped the entire country in the 80s and 90s. Maybe the Martyrs' day should celebrate the heroic stance of King Mwanga II rather than lament the deserved fate of a few dozen deviants.
