A 10-year-old boy left residents of Itare village in Kisii County in shock after he circumcised himself after his parents were allegedly unable to raise Ksh.1,000 to cater for his initiation rite.
The boy, whose medical condition is reported to have worsened, used a kitchen to perform the cut nearly a month ago.
Speaking to Citizen Digital at their home in Kisii, the Class 2 pupil said he was forced to take matters into his own hands to avoid discrimination by his peers who were circumcised during the December holiday.
Following his deteriorating health, the boy was taken to a local dispensary and later referred to the Kisii County Referral Hospital but his parents took him back home since they could not afford the medical fees.
Samwel Momanyi, an activist in Kisii County, is now urging the government to intervene and help the boy, who requires specialised treatment as he is undergoing difficulty urinating.
The 10-year-old is set to remain at home longer as schools re-open on Monday.
