This year April to May rains were heavy enough. Manguo swamp become a small lake. It started to overflow eastwards to Limuru town.
Today I decided to take a walk in the neighbourhood. Then I found that someone decided to drain the swamp and dug up a trench that has ensured continuous flow regime of a"new" stream. This reminded me of those years of yore, when we had a stream originating from the swamp, passing through Bata shoe company gate as it heads South East to join Gathanji stream, near Limuru milk processor.
The then Limuru Municipal council, decided to block the Manguo stream from the source and the adjacent land become a prime property. Along the stream riparian land are to be found, residential and commercial property worth millions of shillings.
With the opening of the swamp for eastward flow, those buildings are now marooned and uninhabitable. Some crafty property owners are now doing what the disgraced governor Waititu proposed, to divert the river course. The Limuru sub county admin office is just 500M away.
Who authorised the draining of this important water source? Limuru town is supplied with water from the 4 boreholes within the swamp locality.
The gist:
What's the status of those marooned plots? Who authorised the construction of the drainage culvert, now coming up near Cactus Petrol station?
Given the importance of Lari, Roromo, Manguo and Kikuyu swamps, the role there play in Nairobi ground water flow, how are we going to sustain the stability of those tall buildings in Nairobi?
Why should we have a slaughter house within the riparian region of the swamp? Are authorities and government scientists not aware that an increase in nitrogen content in water sources is carcinogenic?
There is a claim on this swamp by some property developers, are there the one draining the swamp with ulterior motives?
