You go back to where you came from. A visa is not a 100% guarantee that you will enter a country.
Why should he keep quiet yet he was told he was free to return? Quite a number of people post photos of them in aircrafts and I've never heard they were denied entry to the country they were going to.

Airlines try their best to avoid being forced to return a passenger at their cost. A visa denied means that the passenger has not entered Kenya.
But it's not a requirement to come to Kenya with a visa. So the airline cannot deny you boarding because of that.

It can deny you on the basis of past conduct on previous flights on them or other airlines. Carriage is not guaranteed, in the same way a pub is not obligated to serve you drinks.
