On 19 October 1905, Koitalel arap Samoei, the Orkoiyot and spiritual leader of the Nandi, was assassinated by the British during a meeting supposedly convened to negotiate peace.
For years, the Nandi had resisted British attempts to seize their land and impose colonial rule. Koitalel stood at the centre of that resistance.
He did not surrender.
He did not accept foreign rule.
He led his people in defiance of one of the most powerful empires on earth.
The British colonial authorities invited him to a supposed peace meeting.
It was a trap.
As he approached to negotiate, British officer Richard Meinertzhagen shot him dead.
They killed the man. They could not kill the spirit of resistance
