I don't know why Uhuru lost the Gatundu seat and i am actually interested to hear from Klisters who are better placed to answer you. As for Kibaki, the presidency was kept within the same establishment that our current president comes from. In which case the 1997 loss was just a smokescreen from where I seat.

I know why he lost and I can tell you for certain it was because he was in KANU and was considered Moi's project.
From 1992 Centro totally rejected KANU and has never elected anyone on a KANU ticket, anyone who stood on a kanu ticket automatically lost the election!
Similarly, centro has totally rejected RAT anyone who associates with him becomes a reject!
