Why the switch to solar campaign is dead on arrival

KenGen Communication Director amesema the rush from KPLC to Solar is dead on arrival. Though he makes some valid points on weather and lifespan of the solar option, amesahau KPLC inaweza kua contingency. Only switched on briefly when solar is down

This disadvantage is what may lead many to opt for the island solar system, which works independently and is not connected to the grid. The problem with this, however, is that it is capital-intensive. For example, for a simple two-bedroom house, one would spend at least Sh700,000 to get a system that would entirely replace services offered by the grid. This is what many Kenyans hope for when seeking the solar solution.

Now do the maths. Assuming you were paying Sh3,000 per month to the national utility, it will take up to 20 years to recover the Sh700,000 assuming there are no maintenance costs.

I will simply steal the 700k from the govt coffers and install the system. The idea is not to compute the ROI but to say a big fuck you to the queen mother and her minions at KPLC.

You can't completely cut if from the grid unless you spend as mentioned by @Mwalimu-G hapo juu.
The purpose of opting solar is to have back up to keep you going when the monkeys attack the cables every now and then...

without taking to a/c cost of capital.
Solar will get real competitive when you can take a loan to cover installation costs and your monthly loan service equals or is lower than your kplc bill. That said, there is a class of consumer with lots of roof space who are doing their math and finding solar to be cheaper. A toyota kenya employee aliniambia they are moving to soalr
