Elder Lister
Jonathan Toroitich Moi was the eldest son of former Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi. Born in 1954, he became widely known not because of politics but because of his career in motor rallying. He began competing in rallies in the late 1980s and became one of Kenya's prominent rally drivers. In 1997, he won the Kenya National Rally Championship, driving a Toyota Celica, and he also competed successfully in events such as the Safari Rally, Equator Rally and Nanyuki Rally.
Jonathan was also involved in farming and business, but generally kept a relatively private life despite being the son of a president. He briefly entered politics, unsuccessfully contesting the Eldama Ravine parliamentary seat in 2002 and again in 2007.
Jonathan died in Nakuru on 20 April 2019, aged 64. His family later revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage-four pancreatic cancer, which had spread to his liver and lungs. He had experienced serious health problems for several months before his death.
He was buried on 27 April 2019 at his family home in Kabimoi, Eldama Ravine, Baringo County. His father, Daniel Moi, attended the final rites despite his own declining health. Jonathan was remembered particularly for his rallying career, humility and his decision to largely pursue a life away from the political spotlight.
