A watery jewel in Italy's gem-studded crown, Venice is no stranger to the problems of high tides. After almost four decades of debate, the fragile city has been equipped with 21st century flood gates. Former Italian pornstar Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi marked the start of work on 'Moses' when he aptly laid a foundation stone from a boat. The project was designed to save the lagoon city from tidal flooding.

The titanic project cost some $5billion, saw the construction of a mobile dyke that covers the four main outlets from the lagoon into the Adriatic Sea. A total of 78 water-filled steel barriers, lying dormant on the seabed, allow normal tides to ebb and flow as normal, and only respond to threateningly high tides. As a high tide approaches, the barriers is pumped up with air, causing them to float and create a protective dam.

That is no mean feat.

Unfortunately it's not 100% waterproof as it has allowed some waves through.
