How the death of Kenya Bus spelt doom for Nairobi

Bus Pass.
long long time ago we had a working, reliable public transport system.
students/pupils were offered a discount when they applied for a bus pass.
more than 10 students would share one on a bus ride, woe unto you if the conductor notices and pockets it.

The system was made to collapse intentionally to create room for private sector players who are unregulated and can milk us proper.

For instance kill cheap public transport (KBS) to create room for expensive matatus

Kill public health care to create room for private clinics.

Kill public primary education to create room for expensive private primary schools

Make public water unfit for consumption to create room for bottled water

Kill public sanitation to create room for private garbage collectors

Kill post office to create room for private parcel carriers

Kill government supermarkets to create room for private expensive ones

Kill National housing so that people can rely on private residences

The initial system was working well until the oil crisis of the early 70s where higher fares became an issue and thus some interested parties met Jomo in Gatundu and the 1st president granted leagality to operate matatus.

But yes, you have a point, we're so accustomed to having private solutions for public issues despite us being taxed and it's pretty ferked up when you think about it well.
