Here we go again...

I live in a European country and this time of year is disheartening instead of being joyful. The waste that happens in the name of Christmas is astounding. Already, the traffic is getting heavier with people traveling for shopping trips to buy each other gifts they will never use, new house decorations... of course bigger and better than the neighbors, more food than will be needed... I could go on. Some shops were even decorated way back in August! And some of my neighbors already have their decorative outdoor lights shining all night every night into the new year.. All the while 'worrying' about the environment.
End of rant.
What's the most useless gift you have ever received?

It has to be said that the meaning of Christmas has been watered down over centuries and is now more of a marketing gold mine to make people spend, spend and spend a little bit more.
Orwell used to fear that our spending powers will be capped, Huxley on the other hand will believe that we will be slaves of pleasure, drowning our sorrows in unnecessary spending. Huxley's theory has come to pass

Little wonder that there are more cases of suicides and attempted suicides during holiday season.

The atmosphere makes one question everything because you're reminded of just how poor you are and how lonely you are when you watch families/couples/groups hanging out and spending like there's no tomorrow.

But Christmas has never had meaning, what are you talking about?
Christmas and Easter are all pagan festivities knitted into Christianity.

Barring the dates they're celebrated, the true meaning of them is very significant, more so with Easter. The festivities associated with them such as Easter bunnies and eggs as well as Santa 🎅 ndio pagan in nature.

Who do you follow, Jesus or pagans?
If you follow Jesus, he did not practice these days you're busy trying to justify.
If it's pagans then, I take back my comments.

I am a Christian. End of. I celebrate Christ's birth and the significance of His death and resurrection every other day.
As to having Christmas and Easter, that's beyond me, to be honest, and I don't begrudge anyone who chooses to observe them days.

Spending using Credit cards. I don't envy them. Let fools be fools. At least they recycle most of their stuff. When is black Friday anyway?

Well said. The change of the season and shorter days doesn't help any.

29th of November. I refuse to shop.. its growing into a thing here too despite not having a thanksgiving day..

life is about enjoyment, it's not that so serious, let people enjoy life the way they want, whether Christmas or not if people see it fit to make merry let them be, it's not your money or credit card, pambana na hali yako

This is true, my money my choice. I am just baffled at the mindless consumerism and the misery that sometimes follows. Here there is such a thing as a Christmas loan. Undoubtedly for the poorest in society who feel the pressure to keep up.

I don't understand the OP. Is S/he distressed because another season of nonsense is here? Do you buy those gifts for your children just to perpetuate that father Christmas myth?

I dont, my children are old enough to know about a myth, but we have the ritual.

Did Jesus tell you to celebrate his birthday or his death? Is it a commandment in the Bible? Did he call for extravagance in remembering him?

Did Jesus tell you to call yourself MbitikaZetu?
There are traditions that are to be kept...Passover, Yom Kippur, Yom Hashoah , Communion and many more. Why we observe them is not as religious ceremonies but because of their significance. You won't know until you experience it.
