I have always thought the location is too prime for such lowly business.
how do you define lowly business? there is a lot of money and goods exchanging hands there, there are quality products being sold there, normal people do not feel like they are being ripped off in that area unlike the high class areas. There is more variety to pick from in that area unlike other places where apart from getting ripped off, they still cannot provide different variety of products to sell.

even when it comes to food, vibanda za huko huwa safi sana, what do you mean by lowly business?

I beg to differ here. Gikomba is an eyesore to our city.
By lowly, I mean inferior, primitive, peasantry.
I don't refute that the market has good goods, but the place is too prime for such disorganized biz.
It would be better is kanjo cleared the whole place and build a modern market.

Step in the right direction but too tall of a building, methinks

development takes time, and lies squarely on gavament. Ngong got an upgrade on their market and it is now a pleasant town to visit

That place is a micro economy on its own, many cities have an equivalent. The difference comes in organization and facilities.
Problem is, gikomba as it stands, is in the middle of kanjo formerly kanjo houses. An estate of some sort.
A lot of dubious land allotment may have taken place.
It wasn't a market place originally, or rather its a case of market swallowed an estate.
