Before marrying Tété, Tabu Ley already had three children with two different women. He would later have a very large number of children, with some estimates putting the figure at around 100, although the exact number is unknown.Tété was born in Katanga, while her parents originated from Bandundu. Together, she and Tabu Ley had five children: Blackson-Matthieu, Mireille-Esther, Collette, Gisèle and Isabelle.
Two of their daughters, Mireille and Collette, studied at Utalii College in Nairobi, Kenya. Collette later followed her father's path into the performing arts. Mireille, born in 1964, was Tabu Ley's eldest daughter with Tété, and he dedicated the song “Mireille Mwana” to her.
Their marriage was turbulent, largely because of Tabu Ley's numerous relationships with other women. Tété reportedly left and returned several times. Tabu Ley went on to marry other women, including Mundi and Mbilia Bel, while his relationship with Tété continued. He also had a long-term relationship with Jeanne Mokomo, Miss Zaïre 1969, with whom he reportedly had seven children.
