GARBAGE MANAGEMENT IN NAIROBI: Le General Hath Spoken

Meria

Elder Lister
The Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) warns Nairobians of dire consequences if caught illegally dumping waste/littering, says every household, business and individual should be responsible for the waste they generate.

And that gives you the right to litter anywhere?
Did I say that???

The problem with most people is that they don't understand how a city is run or managed.

If you want people to stop littering then provide many garbage bins in convenient locations and have them emptied four times a day to prevent overflow and also have garbage collection done on a regular schedule .

After that is done, then you can impose fines on those who break the law anything else is an exercise in futility!

Well put. There was a time, as a young kid visited my tata in buruburu and these kind of systems worked like clockwork in harmony.

Form streetlights, garbage collection, water, and so many other stuff.

This is what I long for my kids.

Responsible behavior has to be instilled to Kenyans tumekuwa loose sana, loose than the lady's of the night.
You either have no clue how cities are run or has never stepped outside Kenya. Litter bugs exist all over. It is how the authorities respond that makes the difference. In functional societies, litter is collected on the regular and litter bugs punished or fined heavily. You don't clean cities by simply shouting from the rooftops that people ought to be responsible.

It's a two way thing, authorities have to provide bins and empty them, and citizens have to be responsible to use them.
In this scenario, it's about people throwing garbage at certain points kama roadside or those corners, that's the conversation here.
In those countries you've visited, have you seen people making a dump site by the roadside?

You are bringing a chicken and egg situation. How many dumpsters have you seen in Nairobi for example? The haphazard dumping is as a result of lack of them. south B for example haina dumpster hata moja. Unataka watu wapeleke takataka mpaka Ruai daily?

There also is systemic sabotage by unknown forces who collude with garbage trucks to dump garbage around the county.

I recently witnessed one such truck offloading garbage in Ruai, by the roadside. This is dangerous as the area is in the flight path of aircraft taking off from JKIA and it exposes aircraft to bird collisions.

Kanjo even used to spray estates to kill mosquitos

Hii itahitaji teamwork on both sides. Responsible citizens and regular garbage collection services to prevent over flow
