The UEFA executive committee has received a report asking it to cancel the away goals rule that has been in place in European football competitions since 1965. Tension for European Clubs As UEFA Set to Make Decision Over Away Goals Rule in Football UEFA plans to abolish away goals rule.
It was gathered that a major decision which will take toll on the Champions League as well as Europa League is set to be taken. If approved, football competitions in Europe will go ahead normally in the knockout stages by getting rid of the away goals rule.
As a result, UEFA's executive committee has received the report and it is now set for approval.
If such is passed, Europa Conference League, Europa League and the Champions League will now go ahead without the away goals rule in use. It further states that football matches that end in a draw will head straight into extra-time and later penalties. Away goals rule was launched to avoid teams playing a third game or play off when they draw in all indices.
