All over the world European fortune hunters found "indigenous" people of different nations who had their own names. The Europeans however allocated the natives new names for their own reasons.
In Australia and New Zealand, for example the Koori, Murri, Nunga and the Maoris were lumped together and first became indigenous people which later gave way to the more widely known Aboriginals.
The word Aboriginals has now given way to the more politically correct First Nations People.
In North America, groups such as the Sioux, Paiute, Cherokee, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca were branded "West Indians" -it didn't matter that there was nothing Indian about them. The examples are many and I can't even start with Africa where some people even found themselves referred to by epithets such as Lumbwa or Kitosi.
The lady in the video below seeks to educate the world that they are not happy being called Eskimos.
