Without elephants removing the trees/shrubs, the area would turn into a shrubland/woodland and this would reduce the total productivity of the ecosystem since grasses grow best in open areas and produce more biomass per unit area per yr (or per rainy season) than the trees/shrubs. Natural selection selects the most efficient evolution path and it has decided elephants knocking down trees is the best evolutionary path.
