15 TONNES of cassiterite minerals worth Ksh.15M that were stolen from a Mombasa-bound truck on transit from Congo on 9th May 2020 were yesterday recovered by DCI Detectives at Salgaa shopping centre in Nakuru County where two suspects linked to the theft were also arrested.
Investigations into the loss of the said product were taken over by the DCI after Northern Corridor patrol officers questioned an accident by a Trakana Company Ltd truck they found lying along Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
The seals had been tampered with and of the Ksh. 250M worth of consignment it was ferrying,15 tonnes were missing.
Detectives pursuing the case narrowed down on the two suspects namely 68-year-old Julius Gikonyo Mwangi & 50-yr-Stephen Kariuki Ndirangu who upon arrest in Nakuru led them to Salgaa where they had hidden the entire cargo.
Further investigations revealed that the truck driver, 45-year-old Omar Juma sold the products at Salgaa, before proceeding to Salama area along Nairobi-Mombasa highway where he faked the accident.
He is being sought as the two suspects remain in custody pending arraignment.
Cassiterite is a tin oxide mineral, SnO2. It is generally opaque, but it is translucent in thin crystals. Its luster and multiple crystal faces produce a desirable gem. Cassiterite has been the chief tin ore throughout ancient history and remains the most important source of tin today.
