A GSU officer was on Tuesday shot dead by his colleague under unclear circumstances at Mitete village in Laikipia West.

Confirming the incident, Laikipia County Police commander John Nyoike said the two officers engaged in an altercation at the GSU camp in the area before one of them unleashed his firearm and attacked his colleague.

After the incident, the armed officer took off with his belongings including the firearm involved in the attack.

Efforts to arrest the fleeing officer turned futile after he managed to escape as he opened fire at his colleagues who were pursuing him.

The police commander said investigations are underway to establish the motive of the attack as well as a manhunt for the officer
