Charles Njonjo was one of the most powerful unelected men in Kenya’s history.
A legal architect of the post-independence state.
A gatekeeper of political order.
A man who understood the machinery of power better than most presidents.
He also helped shape the conditions that made Daniel arap Moi’s rise to the presidency not only possible but inevitable.
Yet less than five years after Moi took office, Njonjo found himself isolated, accused, and politically dismantled by the same system he had helped construct.
Building the Foundations of Power
As Kenya’s first Attorney General after independence, Njonjo played a central role in designing the legal and institutional framework of the new state.
The emphasis was clear.
Stability first.
Dissent second.
Presidential authority above all.
During the final years of Jomo Kenyatta’s rule, succession politics became increasingly tense.
Competing elite factions quietly sought to block Vice President Daniel arap Moi from taking over.
Njonjo broke with that momentum.
He defended constitutional continuity and the established line of succession, effectively reinforcing Moi’s path to power when Kenyatta died in 1978.
Moi became president, legally, smoothly, and without contest.
Njonjo had helped ensure that outcome.
At the time it looked like political mastery.
In hindsight it was the beginning of a fatal miscalculation.
The Illusion of Permanence
Under Moi, Njonjo retained extraordinary influence.
He moved easily within the highest circles of power, projecting an image of permanence.
A man who had survived regimes and shaped outcomes too fundamental to be reversed.
But Moi’s presidency was not built on gratitude.
It was built on consolidation.
And in consolidation, even allies can become liabilities.
Njonjo’s networks were vast.
His connections to the old Kenyatta establishment, the judiciary, foreign contacts, and security institutions made him
