Seems he was released on a procedural issue i.e the then D.A decided not to prosecute him in exchange of providing self-incriminating information during a civil suit instigated by his accuser without the benefit of his privilege of the Fifth Amendment. The civil action was settled down and he paid millions of dollars and the D.A kept his promise. A new D.A came along and instituted the criminal case.
