Some time back I began to appreciated the importance of dowry. When a girl leaves home to get married, it registers as a death-like event in the parent's conscience. It is as if the girl is getting kidnapped by a total stranger as you watch helplessly. She becomes an asset to another family while you are left with a vacant position. The case is worse if the girl was instrumental in running the homestead.
When Abba discovered that the daughter had left, he spoke only three words; naenda kunywa busaa. This made me realize how depressing it is to watch a child leave, hence the adoption of dowry to give the process some positive facet, however small, compared to the loss. This might also explain why men preferred to get boys to girls.
